A Thrilling Seed Hunter Day at Tasman School

The latest Seed Hunter Day at Tasman School was an absolute triumph, filled with excitement, learning, and a whole lot of mud! As part of our mission to rewild New Zealand, we introduced the students to the wonders of native flora and fauna, teaching them the art of seed collection and harvesting.

The day began with a buzz of enthusiasm as the young Seed Hunters eagerly absorbed knowledge about the diverse plant and animal life that call our beautiful country home. Their eyes sparkled with curiosity as they learned about the importance of preserving and nurturing these natural treasures.

But the real fun began when it was time to put their newfound knowledge into practice. Armed with baskets and a keen eye for detail, the students ventured out into the school grounds, meticulously collecting seeds from various native plants. Their determination and passion were truly inspiring, as they carefully gathered these precious gems, ensuring their future growth and propagation.

The highlight of the day, however, came when we introduced the art of seed bomb making. Invented in Japan, these ingenious clay balls are designed to be sown in public and private lands, allowing nature to reclaim its rightful place. With a sense of wonder and excitement, the Seed Hunters rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty, molding the clay and embedding the collected seeds within.

As the afternoon progressed, the energy levels soared, and the laughter echoed through the school grounds. It was then that we decided to take things to the next level – by introducing mud! What started as a simple seed-collecting activity quickly turned into a delightful, mud-filled adventure.[1] The students embraced the opportunity wholeheartedly, giggling and squealing with delight as they playfully frolicked in the mud, their faces beaming with pure joy.

The day was a resounding success, not only in terms of the knowledge imparted and the seeds collected but also in the sheer joy and camaraderie that blossomed among the young Seed Hunters. As they left the school grounds, their hands were stained with mud, but their hearts were filled with a newfound appreciation for nature and a determination to be stewards of our precious environment.

The Seed Hunter Days format has proven to be an invaluable tool in achieving our mission of rewilding New Zealand. By engaging the youth and instilling in them a love for the natural world, we are paving the way for a greener, more sustainable future. The memories of this particular day will undoubtedly linger, serving as a reminder of the power of hands-on learning and the pure, unadulterated joy that comes from embracing nature in all its glory – even when it means getting a little muddy along the way.
